Bayer 50: Did You Know?

In 1995, National Public Radio listeners began hearing "Everyday Science" a series of two-minute vignettes that explores the wonders of science found in everyday life. Bayer launched the series as part of our Making Science Make Sense initiative to advance science literacy throughout the U.S. Today, “Everyday Science” is heard on nearly 200 stations around the country.

Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability

  • Pittsburgh/Allegheny County Mutual Aid Council (PAMAC)
Following the 1988 Ashland Oil spill in the Monongahela River, Mobay V. P. Walt Becker led a study of Pittsburgh’s emergency resources. The Council’s work resulted in publication of an Emergency Equipment and Resource Manual to enhance the city’s preparedness in the event of future disasters.

  • Wildlife Habitat
Bayer has dedicated 200 acres of our 300-acre site to wildlife enhancement. Trained Bayer volunteers host a variety of educational programs on the site including Wings of Wonder, a study of bird species of Western Pennsylvania and a pond study module to help students understand Pennsylvania’s standards in environment and ecology. The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) honored Bayer’s wildlife team with its 2003 Corporate “Lands for Learning Award.” In 2008, WHC honored Bayer with its “Signature of Sustainability Award.” Bayer is one of just 21 companies nationwide and one of two sites in Pennsylvania to receive the latter award.

  • 2000 USEPA Green Chemistry Challenge Award
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency presented the 2000 Green Chemistry Challenge Award to Bayer for the development of environmentally friendly coatings with reduced organic solvent content. The new technology reduces volatile air emissions by as much as 99 percent.
